Businesses of the church

Maamafo’ou Enterprises

Maamafo’ou (meaning “New Light”) was the first business venture of the church. It was established by Reverend Senituli Koloi on the 1st March 1976. It had its first office in Auckland at 41 Ponsonby Road. The building was popularly known as Fa taha. It began by exporting taro leaves from Tonga to Auckland, New Zealand. Later other foodstuffs, mainly root crops, meat and Tongan craft were shipped both ways by containers. Maamafo’ou also included a travel agency in 1977. Towards the end of 1977 Reverend Koloi established a branch of the Maamafo’ou in Tonga. This business helped the village people in Tonga who were experiencing financial hardship by exporting their food crops for sale in New Zealand.

Maseia

Maseia Plaza, a three-story business centre was opened in central Nuku’alofa on January the 2nd 1988 by the late Prince Tu’ipelihake. The name Maseia means ‘the work of God’. The name Maamafo’ou was replaced by Maseia which took over all its business interests. It was the vision of Reverend Liufau Saulala. The building was built by the people of the church working together in shifts day and night, each helping in whatever capacity he or she was able. A branch of Maseia Holdings was established in New Zealand in 1998

Today Maseia houses shops, offices, a restaurant and a money-transfer department. “Campus Crusade for Christ” and “Scripture Union” each have an office there.
